Patrick Koppenburg: Publishing LHCb papers

Friday, 22 March 2019 from to (Europe/London)

The LHCb experiment at CERN has published close to 500 papers with an average of 800 authors each. Such industrial numbers need a well structured organisation and defined procedures. I will take a hot-of-the-press LHCb preprint, present its physics, and then follow it through the LHCb publication procedures to show what is happening behind the scenes. The way we handle publications in experimental particle physics is unusual in science. As a community, we sometimes feel we are not affected by the big changes affecting the publication industry. We may be very wrong. In particular early career scientists should take an active role in shaping the future of scientific publishing.
